Over 150 students applied for scholarships offered by the Community Foundation for Northern Virginia in 2009. We are pleased to announce the following winners of the Elizabeth Koury, Rose Koury, Cameron and Virginia Dye and Vance International Scholarships.
The Elizabeth Koury Scholarship for medicine was awarded to Victoria Kao of South Riding, VA. Daughter of Li Hsu and Chung Kao, Victoria graduated from Freedom High School. Victoria was inspired to major in nursing because of her experiences as a patient. She wrote of her week spent in the hospital recovering from surgery, and of the kind and compassionate nurse who helped make her comfortable. She writes, “I have been blessed to have so many wonderful people that took care of me…I hope one day I can do the same for my future patients.” Victoria will attend James Madison University. The Rose Koury Scholarship for a student studying education was awarded to Chad McMichael of Sterling, VA. Son of Kevin and Dora Lee McMichael, Chad is attending Campbell University this fall. Chad noted in his application that his interest in education was inspired by his mother, a teacher in the Loudoun County Public Schools, and by his experience as a basketball coach. Chad wrote, “I hope to use my life experiences to make a difference for children. I see what motivators my mom and other teachers can be. I want to be able to provide support and advice for students who don’t have a support system in place, the way I do.” This was the first time the Koury Scholarships were offered. The scholarships are the result of a bequest to NVCF from two sisters who were Northern Virginia residents. The scholarships recognize academic achievement, as well as service and commitment to the field of education or medicine. The Koury Scholarships are designed to provide signficant financial support to students throught their four years of college. Two students were awarded the Cameron and Virginia Dye Scholarship, which is awarded to graduates of Arlington Public Schools in recognition of academic achievement, community involvement, and financial need. Winners of this four-year scholarship are Allana Rivera and Alexandra Pill. Both are graduates of Washington Lee High School. Rivera attends the University of Virginia and Pill attends Emory University. The Vance International Scholarship is awarded to students pursing a career in law enforcement or security. Winners in 2009 are Antonio Dunkley of Fairfax Station, Melissa Alba of Fairfax, and Jared Morrison of Ashburn. NVCF holds 20 scholarship funds that distributed $138,750 to Northern Virginia students in 2009.
